Forays into Epic Fantasy: Introducing Eternal Dusk Part I

Despite writing various books for over two decades now across many genres, I never envisioned a future in which I would write epic fantasy. Not because I didn't like fantasy, but because it seemed like the type of thing that everyone did, and it has always been my inclination to move in the opposite direction of anything commonplace.

It just so happened, though, that a year or so ago the story that was burning its way out of me was epic fantasy. Who was I to tell it that it was wrong. Several months and 80,000 words later, part of me wonders why it took me this long to make the leap.

Granted, this isn't traditional epic fantasy in every sense. It's fantasy on a grand scale, yes, with world-bending consequences and points of view aplenty. But it's also (I hope) nuanced, a book that won't make it easy for you to tell who is hero and who is villain. There are enough dark elements that I considered branding it dark fantasy but ultimately decided against it because I think the overall tone is much brighter than would fit dark fantasy or grimdark. It's supposed to be honest about the dark side of life, to build some level of empathy for it, but not to wallow in it for its own sake. Sometimes beauty can be found where you least expect it.
