It's strange to me to think that I've already put two books out into the world this year. This has been by far my most prolific year of writing, but it's interesting how even as that is the case how much it can feel like what I'm currently working on is dragging on interminably.
My main focus at the moment is a fantasy book series that I'll call ET for now. I've never written a fantasy book before, likely at least in part because I have a gut-level instinct not to write anything similar to what everyone else is doing, and sometimes it feels like (even if this isn't necessarily true) that fantasy is a behemoth that makes up the bulk of fiction out there.
My goal with the series is to tell both sides of a decades-old conflict between Light and Black Magic. Ideally, I want readers to feel divided about who to root for and to see both good and bad in just about all of the characters in varying degrees. ET is a two-parter. I'm on draft three or so on Part I, as well as nearing the halfway point of draft one of Part II. Part I is nearing copyediting stage, but I may still tinker with a few pieces of it structurally, especially as the plot of Part II continues to take shape.
So far ET is the project that has flowed easiest for me of any project I've written. I'm optimistic that it will land well for people, but my focus now is making sure that Part II maintains the momentum and builds on Part I rather than detracting from it.
