I'm pleased to announce a project that I've been working on for some time: A novel that explores mental health and the difference between love and romance. While it does approach mental health in a serious way, the tone isn't as dark as many books about mental health. As I've seen in my work as a therapist, there is a broad range of mental health concerns that range from relatively mild but still important to soul crushing and life threatening. My book involves mental health challenges of a moderate intensity -- enough to affect a person's life quite seriously but not enough to involve self-harm.
Although the book does involve mental health, that's not really what the core of the story is about. Rather, it is about the simple but surprisingly unusual decision to make the happiness and wellbeing of another person the focal point of one's life, and how that choice ripples throughout one college student's life.
Because my take on this is somewhat unique, I'm not really sure whether to consider this book a Romance novel or not. Some people would, for sure, but it's unconventional enough in its approach that in my opinion that label doesn't fit very well. Probably the most accurate genre is Contemporary Fiction, or maybe Slice of Life (for all the manga and webtoon aficionados in the house). It's nuanced. It's unique. It's wholesome but doesn't hold your hand. In other words, I couldn't find the type of book I really wanted to read -- so I wrote it myself.
I plan on publishing it sometime in the next few months, so if you want to stay in the loop join the email list or follow me on Instagram (link is on the bottom right of this page). I'll be doing a title reveal, cover reveal, and a lot more, so don't miss it.
